Working with project templates in Transit NXT
Working with project templates in Transit NXT
In this tooltip, we shall see how to create and work with project templates. Project templates are extremely useful if you have to repeatedly create projects with the same settings. Imagine you have to frequently translate MS Word documents from English into 4 different target languages for a specific client. You always use the same reference repository, the same dictionaries, the same pretranslation and segmentation options etc. For such cases, it is convenient to define a project template. Once you have created the template with all the required settings, you can easily create subsequent projects based on that template, at the speed of light.
To create a project template, select Project | Template | Create as shown in the screenshot below:
A template can be created from scratch or based on an already existing template. Select the desired option and save the template with a descriptive name and the desired scope. After that, you will be prompted to make the appropriate settings. The project settings window along with an additional tab called Wizard will be displayed as shown in the screenshot below:
Now, pick your settings as you would when creating a normal project. Choose the languages, file type, reference material, dictionaries, etc. All the settings you make here will be saved in the template. In the Wizard tab, specify which steps shall be prompted by the Create new project wizard when a new project is created based on the template you just defined. For example, if you uncheck the Languages and File type options, when you create a new project based on this template, you will not be prompted to set the source/target language and file type since you have already defined these in your template. In addition to the enormous time savings, the project template feature guarantees consistency of project settings. This is a crucial quality factor in project management and also translates into better leveraging of reference material. When you create a new project, you can choose the Create new project using template option and select the created template from the drop-down list as shown in the screenshot below:
Transit NXT comes with a lot of pre-defined templates that you can pick from the drop-down list shown in the screenshot above. You can either use these pre-defined templates or create new templates on your own. Apart from creating a template, you can modify an existing template or delete it. Select Project | Template | Modify or Delete as shown in the screenshot below:
So, the next time you work with Transit NXT do try out this feature. You will immediately notice the time you save and therefore the efficiency achieved. Do not hesitate to leave your comments or ask for specific tooltips.
