Each new Service Pack of Transit NXT aims to increase the efficiency of the translation management process and make life easier for both translators and project managers. As a translation project manager, you may receive files for translation in various formats, or you may receive translation project packages to be forwarded to the translator. In this post, we will discuss how to handle translation project packages from other systems (SDLPPX, for example) in Transit NXT.

Up until now, it was only possible to unpack Transit NXT projects (in PPF format), but with Service Pack 8, it is now possible to handle projects from other systems, such as SDLPPX files. This means that it is no longer necessary to have a specific CAT tool for each of the different projects. You can handle different kinds of projects directly in Transit using Transit’s new project exchange features. Let's take SDLPPX files as an example in order to illustrate how this can be done. To unpack an SDLPPX project in Transit NXT, go to Project > Exchange (Transit/XLIFF/SDLPPX) > Unpack and select Unpack SDL Project package (*.sdlppx) from the file types, as shown in the image below:

As well as unpacking projects, you can also use your own translation memory to optimise the pre-translation, i.e., you can improve the SDLPPX pre-translations using your own translation memory (Transit language pairs). You can do this by adding the language pairs to the Reference material tab of the Project Settings window via Project > Administration > Settings and importing the project again by using the Project > Processing > Import option. After importing, Transit will pre-translate your files using the translation memories you have added. You can now forward the project to the translator as a Transit NXT project (PPF), for them to return it to you in Transit NXT format (TPF). The translated TPF file can then be unpacked and you can carry out the necessary review process and pack the file again to send it to the client in the format used by the system in which the client created the project. This means that you can pack the translation as an SDLRPX file by going to Project > Exchange (Transit/XLIFF/SDLPPX) > Pack translation. The Pack SDL Return Package (*.sdlppx) will be selected for you by default as shown in the following image:

This allows you to unpack projects from other systems in Transit, improve pre-translations using your own translation memory and take advantage of all of the functions of Transit NXT, even when working on projects from other systems. It also allows you to return translations to be used in the same system in which they were created. Transit NXT therefore allows you to handle many different kinds of projects, whether it is an SDLPPX file, a PPX file or an XLIFF file.
